The New Zealand captain has ruptured the anterior cruciate ligament (ACL) in his right knee and will almost certainly miss the 50-overs World Cup later this year in India.
Last Friday, the elite top-order batsman was injured while fielding for the Gujarat Titans in the Indian Premier League and was flown back to New Zealand. On Tuesday, scans revealed that the injury would necessitate surgery, making him unlikely to be fit and available for selection for the tournament in October and November.
