Babar Azam Set to Rejoin Pakistan’s T20I Squad

Babar Azam’s exclusion from Pakistan’s T20I team is expected to come to an end soon, with reports indicating that the Pakistan Cricket Board (PCB) is considering recalling him ahead of the 2025 Asia Cup.

BBN Sports has reported that Babar is in line for a return to the T20I squad, although the comeback is not yet guaranteed. Sources close to the team management have stated that his recall will depend on two crucial factors: a strong performance in the upcoming Pakistan Super League (PSL) and a notable improvement in his strike rate.

The message is clear—selection will be based on performance, not reputation.

Babar, who will once again lead Peshawar Zalmi in PSL 10 starting April 11, is under scrutiny not just as a captain but also as a top-order batter. While his technical ability and consistency remain unquestioned, concerns have been raised about his approach, particularly his scoring rate. In a format where power and adaptability are increasingly emphasized, Babar’s strike rate has been a point of contention.

These concerns led to his exclusion from Pakistan’s T20I squad in late 2024. Despite being close to becoming the all-time leading run-scorer in the format, Babar has not played a T20I since December 2024. His strike rate, which has hovered around the high 120s, was considered inadequate for the modern demands of T20 cricket, particularly for a top-order player.

However, his replacements have struggled to make an impact. Mohammad Haris and Hasan Nawaz have shown only brief flashes of promise, which could potentially strengthen Babar’s case for a return. With players like Saim Ayub and Fakhar Zaman also coming back into the mix, Babar could slot in at No. 3 or No. 4 to provide stability to a middle order that was exposed during recent series against New Zealand.

With the ICC T20 World Cup next year and the Asia Cup later this year, the door is open for Babar’s return—but only if he delivers the kind of dynamic performances selectors are seeking.

Within the Zalmi camp, the 30-year-old remains a central figure. His leadership will be crucial, but so will the tempo he sets with the bat. In previous PSL editions, Babar has been among the top run-scorers, but his conservative strike rate has often been criticized. If he is to regain a place in Pakistan’s T20I setup, his strike rate will need to improve.

Babar’s pedigree is undisputed—his elegance and timing are rare qualities—but in T20 cricket, stats and intent often speak louder than reputation. For Babar Azam, PSL 10 is not just another tournament; it is an opportunity for redemption, a chance to combine class with intent, and secure his place in Pakistan’s T20I plans once more.
