Punjab’s Information and Culture Minister, Azma Bukhari, carried out surprise inspections at three prominent Lahore theatres late on Wednesday night, targeting alleged breaches of cultural standards. The raids were conducted at Mehfil Theatre, Prince Theatre, and Tamaseel Theatre, where the minister scrutinized cafeterias, dressing rooms, and performance halls.
Bukhari expressed strong dissatisfaction with the content and attire seen during the performances, particularly criticizing the songs played on stage and the actors’ clothing. She also raised concerns about the management of the Punjab Arts Council and the overall cleanliness of the theatres.

As a result of her inspections, show-cause notices were issued to five well-known stage artists, including Sajan Abbas, Neeli, Saima Khan, Nayab Khan, and Sonu Butt. The notices highlighted that any violation of the government’s cultural standards would lead to severe consequences, including a lifetime ban on performing in Punjab theatres.
Addressing the media, Bukhari emphasized her commitment to eradicating vulgarity from the theatre scene, stating, “I do not want to snatch anyone’s livelihood, but I will not allow obscenity and indecency in Punjab’s theatres.” She also urged theatre owners to ensure that only quality, meaningful entertainment is provided to the public.
