Azad Jammu and Kashmir’s Education Department has extended winter holidays for government and semi-government institutions due to severe cold conditions. The decision aims to protect students from harsh weather across the region.
According to the official notification, schools and colleges that were set to reopen on January 12 will now resume academic activities on January 17, 2026. Authorities said the extension was necessary due to persistently low temperatures.
Officials explained that exposing students to extreme cold could pose health risks, particularly for younger children. The extension is intended to ensure student safety during the ongoing cold spell.
The notification confirms that the decision applies to all public sector and semi-government educational institutions across AJK. Regular teaching activities will restart from the revised reopening date.
The move comes as cold weather continues to disrupt daily routines in several parts of the country. Punjab has also extended winter vacations after reviewing prevailing weather conditions.
Punjab’s Higher Education Department has directed universities and colleges to resume classes from January 19 while keeping examinations unchanged. Sindh, meanwhile, has opted for adjusted school timings instead.
