Australian Legend Slams Babar Azam’s Role Ahead of BBL Knockouts

Former Australian batter Mark Waugh has sparked debate by suggesting that Sydney Sixers consider leaving Babar Azam out of their playing XI for the team’s must-win Big Bash League (BBL) knockout match on January 23. Waugh argued that the Sixers may benefit from a more explosive opening option to give the team a stronger start.

Speaking during commentary for the Hobart Hurricanes vs Melbourne Stars fixture, Waugh questioned whether the current top-order setup is providing the team with the right balance. While acknowledging Babar’s class and experience, he highlighted inconsistent starts and a scoring rate that can place additional pressure on the rest of the batting lineup, particularly with Steve Smith expected to accelerate the innings.

The debate intensified after Babar’s recent performance in the Sixers’ qualifier against Perth Scorchers at Optus Stadium. In that match, Babar was dismissed for a second-ball duck while chasing 148, stumped by Josh Inglis off Cooper Connolly. This early setback left the team in immediate trouble and reignited discussions about his role in the side.

So far in his debut BBL season, Babar has played 11 matches, scoring 202 runs at an average of 37.27, including two fifties that contributed to key wins. However, critics point to his strike rate of around 103, arguing it falls short of the demands for modern T20 powerplay batting, especially in a team relying on rapid scoring upfront.

The contrast between Babar and Steve Smith has also drawn attention. Since joining the Sixers after the Ashes, Smith has made an immediate impact, accumulating 210 runs off just 122 balls in four matches, including a fifty and a century. His high-intensity batting has shifted focus toward the team’s overall approach and the need for aggressive starts.

With knockout pressure mounting, Waugh’s comments have intensified the discussion: should the Sixers prioritize Babar’s stability at the top of the order, or gamble on a more aggressive opener to maximize powerplay momentum and boost their chances in a crucial match?
