PIA Allegedly Issued 258,000 Free Tickets and 116,000 at 95% Discount

An audit report revealed that Pakistan International Airlines (PIA) caused losses of Rs. 9.43 billion to the national exchequer over six years by issuing free and heavily discounted tickets.

From 2011 to 2016, the airline gave away over 258,000 tickets for free and sold another 116,000 at discounts of up to 95%, many to individuals with no official connection to PIA. The Auditor General noted these concessions were made without approval from the airline’s top management and urged an immediate halt to the practice.

PIA later confirmed the scheme ended in 2018 after the Supreme Court banned free ticket distribution, saying the policy was originally part of an agent incentive program. A spokesperson added the audit observations are outdated and suggested renewed scrutiny may be linked to external pressure from certain groups.
