At least 40 migrants have died after a boat capsized off the coast of Tunisia, local authorities confirmed on Thursday.
The vessel was reportedly carrying more than 70 people attempting to cross the Mediterranean Sea toward Europe. Rescue teams managed to save several survivors, who are now receiving medical treatment.
Officials said the overcrowded boat encountered rough weather near the coastal city of Sfax before it sank. Many of the victims are believed to be from sub-Saharan Africa.
The Tunisian coast guard has launched an operation to recover more bodies and search for missing passengers. Witnesses said the boat had departed late at night to avoid detection.
This tragedy is the latest in a series of deadly incidents involving migrant boats in the Mediterranean, as thousands continue to risk their lives seeking better opportunities in Europe.
Human rights groups have urged both North African and European governments to take stronger measures to prevent such disasters and offer safer migration routes.
