Asthma is caused by several factors. Often there lies an allergic component that triggers asthmatic attacks(so most Physicians advise to use anti allergic drugs). In some cases, there is genetic cause. Whilst in some cases, it may be an acquired reaction, perhaps due to exposure to an irritant. The state of nervous tone of the body can also lead to bronchial spasm (bronchioles are tiny wind pipes found inside lungs).
In predisposed peoples, tension , anxiety, hyperactivity or exhaustion can cause so much stress that an asthma attack is triggered of. Similarly, spasms or difficulty in breathing could be caused by osteopathic problems that happen to have affect the spot where the thoracic nerve comes out of the spine.

Asthma responds well to herbal treatment, but it is impossible to provide a prescription that is appropriate in all cases.
Mostly these herbs are useful in about 85% cases:
Ephedra sinica
Valeriana officinalis.
Licorice
Pimpinella anisum.
There combinations and dose depends on cause of asthma. Often antibiotic Azithromycin is given in modern medical culture.
