ISLAMABAD – In a major development for Pakistan’s military leadership structure, President Asif Ali Zardari has officially approved the appointment of Field Marshal Syed Asim Munir as both the Chief of Army Staff (COAS) and the newly created Chief of Defence Forces (CDF). The approval came after Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif endorsed the decision and forwarded the summary to the Presidency for final confirmation.

According to the official announcement, Field Marshal Asim Munir will serve a five-year term as Chief of Defence Forces while simultaneously continuing his role as the Chief of Army Staff. This marks a historic moment, as he becomes Pakistan’s first-ever Chief of Defence Forces—a position designed to enhance coordination between the country’s military branches and strengthen overall defence strategy.

The statement further revealed that President Zardari has granted a two-year extension to Air Chief Marshal Zaheer Ahmed Baber Sidhu. His extended tenure will commence on March 19, 2026, ensuring continuity within the Pakistan Air Force’s top command.

President Zardari expressed his best wishes to both military leaders, emphasizing the importance of stability and experienced leadership within Pakistan’s armed forces. He highlighted that their roles will be crucial in guiding the country through evolving security challenges, regional dynamics, and defence modernization efforts.

Field Marshal Asim Munir’s dual responsibilities signify a significant expansion of command authority, placing him at the helm of Pakistan’s defence apparatus for the next five years. His appointment as both COAS and CDF reflects the government’s confidence in his leadership and strategic vision.

The creation of the Chief of Defence Forces role marks an important restructuring step aimed at enhancing inter-services coordination. With these high-level appointments now confirmed, Pakistan enters a new phase of military leadership focused on stronger defence integration and long-term institutional stability.
