Defence Minister Khawaja Asif has strongly criticised Afghan refugees in Pakistan, accusing some of them of providing shelter to terrorists and undermining the country’s security. He said that Pakistan has hosted Afghan nationals for decades, but recent incidents show that some elements among them are involved in supporting militant activities.
Speaking to reporters, Asif stated that Pakistan has shown great patience and hospitality towards Afghan refugees, but now that patience is running out. He said, “Those who live here as guests but attack our people or insult our flag must go back.” The minister added that Afghanistan’s government should take responsibility for its citizens and stop allowing its soil to be used for terrorism.
He emphasised that the continued presence of such individuals poses a serious security risk. According to him, militants who operate from Afghan territory are targeting Pakistan’s forces and civilians. Asif noted that despite repeated requests, Kabul has failed to act against terrorist groups operating near the border.
The Defence Minister also said that Pakistan’s generosity should not be mistaken for weakness. He pointed out that the country can no longer afford to host people who harm its peace and stability. “Our borders must be respected, and those who refuse to do so should return to their homeland,” he added.
His remarks come amid ongoing tensions between Pakistan and Afghanistan over cross-border terrorism and the treatment of refugees. The government has already begun reviewing its refugee policy, aiming to ensure that national security remains a top priority.
