Pakistan Army Deployed in Islamabad Under Article 245 Amid Escalating Violence
The government has deployed the Pakistan Army in Islamabad under Article 245 of the Constitution to assist civil authorities in restoring law and order following increasing violence in the capital.
Security Measures and Directives
Security sources reported early Tuesday that the decision was prompted by attacks targeting law enforcement personnel. Authorities have issued clear directives to deal with anarchists and miscreants decisively, including shoot-on-sight orders for those posing immediate threats. Additional measures are being implemented to counter potential terrorist acts by extremist elements.
Fatal Incidents and Casualties
Amid the unrest, miscreants rammed a vehicle into Rangers personnel on the Srinagar Highway, resulting in the martyrdom of four Rangers officials. Five others, including Rangers and police personnel, sustained serious injuries.
Two police officers have also been martyred in separate attacks, while over 100 police officials have been injured since the PTI launched its protest march on Islamabad. Many of the injured are in critical condition.

Constitutional Context: Article 245
Article 245(1) of the Constitution authorizes the federal government to direct the armed forces to defend Pakistan against external aggression and assist civil authorities in maintaining order. It also bars courts from questioning such directives or exercising jurisdiction in areas where the army is deployed under Article 245.
Government’s Stance
Interior Minister Mohsin Naqvi, in a late-night media briefing, hinted at the possibility of extreme measures, including a curfew, deploying the army, or exploring a “third option,” should violence persist.
Naqvi urged PTI protesters to relocate to the Sangjani area for their demonstrations, warning that entry into Islamabad would not be permitted.
“If a curfew, Article 245, or another measure is needed, we will take it,” he stated, emphasizing the government’s resolve to prevent bloodshed. He also accused protesters of instigating violence and warned that any provocation would be met with a firm response.
This move underscores the government’s commitment to maintaining order amid ongoing political and security challenges in the capital.
