Apple to Pay Selected iPhone Users $65 for ‘Batterygate’ Scandal

Share

In the context of the “Batterygate” scandal that emerged in 2020, Apple is now issuing payouts to iPhone users who filed claims related to the deliberate slowdown of older iPhone models. This scandal involved Apple intentionally slowing down older iPhones, prompting a wave of user complaints. Apple subsequently agreed to settle the matter by allocating up to $500 million for payouts.

Each individual who filed a claim before October 6, 2020, regarding the slowdown of older iPhones, is set to receive a $65 settlement. However, not all iPhone users are eligible for this payout. To be eligible, users must have owned an iPhone model from before 2018, and the list of claim-eligible models includes iPhone 6, 6 Plus, 6s, 6s Plus, 7, 7 Plus, and SE.

The term “Batterygate” was coined to describe this scandal. Apple’s approach involved intentionally slowing down the performance of older iPhone models using aging batteries that would degrade over time, causing performance issues. This issue gained attention in 2017 when users discovered that their iPhone performance problems were resolved after replacing the battery.

Apple justified the practice of slowing down iPhones by explaining that as batteries age, there is a risk of the phone unexpectedly shutting down. While investigations into the matter were conducted, the claims were refuted. Rather than prolong the legal battle, Apple opted to reach a settlement, agreeing to pay between $310 million and $500 million, depending on the number of claims filed. The company’s alleged motivation for this tactic was to encourage customers to upgrade to newer iPhone models, thereby generating recurring revenue through this pattern.
