Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif has given approval to phase out electricity meter readers from power distribution companies across the country.

According to reports, a new digital platform called “Apna Meter, Apni Reading” will soon be introduced, enabling consumers to submit their own meter readings through the app.

The initiative will be rolled out nationwide, excluding areas under K-Electric’s jurisdiction.

Currently, meter readers photograph electricity meters and send the images to distribution companies (DISCOs) for billing. However, this system has led to widespread complaints of overbilling and inaccuracies, leaving many consumers frustrated over inflated bills.

Earlier in April, LESCO CEO Ramzan Butt announced the development of a mobile app to let consumers enter their own meter readings.

While technical specifics and visuals of the app are still awaited, its launch is expected soon.

The primary goal of the project is to bring transparency to the billing process and minimize disputes.

Meanwhile, in May 2025, NEPRA reduced electricity rates by Rs1.55 per unit nationwide, including Karachi, as part of the third quarterly adjustment for the fiscal year.
