Kumara triumphed over opposition leader Sajith Premadasa in a closely contested election. Following his victory, he expressed optimism about a new beginning for the nation, emphasizing the importance of unity among all Sri Lankan citizens—Sinhalese, Tamils, Muslims, and others—as the cornerstone for development and stability.
Historical Context
This election was particularly notable as it was Sri Lanka’s first presidential election since the severe economic crisis of 2022. Due to no candidate securing over 50% of the votes, the president was ultimately elected through preferential voting. The previous president, Ranil Wickremesinghe, was eliminated in the first round.
