The Punjab government has officially dismissed speculation about another Basant celebration this year, confirming that the festival will not take place again until its next scheduled edition. Officials said the clarification was issued to address widespread rumors circulating on social media suggesting an additional event could be organized soon.
Provincial Information Minister Azma Bokhari stated in a video message that Basant will now be celebrated in February 2027, stressing that no proposal is under consideration for holding it earlier. She explained that the government wants to maintain an organized schedule and ensure future celebrations are conducted with improved planning and safety arrangements.
She acknowledged that kite-flying activities had been reported in several cities during recent days, but authorities deliberately avoided strict enforcement because no injuries or losses were recorded. According to her, the administration chose a measured approach rather than immediate crackdowns, noting that public enthusiasm remained peaceful and did not create serious safety concerns.
Bokhari added that the strong public participation demonstrated how deeply people value the festival and its cultural significance. She remarked that she personally shares the excitement surrounding Basant and assured citizens that the next official edition will be larger, better organized, and more vibrant than this year’s celebration.
Earlier this month, the government revived Basant in Lahore after an 18-year ban, allowing festivities from February 6 to 8 under strict safety regulations. The event marked a historic return of the traditional festival, which had long been suspended due to safety concerns, particularly those linked to hazardous kite strings.
Following the festival, Chief Minister Maryam Nawaz praised administrators and law enforcement agencies for ensuring the event concluded without a single fatality. Officials say preparations for 2027 will focus on enhanced safety, improved organization, and broader participation to make the next Basant celebration even more successful.
