Anita Karim, Pakistan’s most accomplished female mixed martial artist, has achieved a historic milestone by becoming the country’s first female Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu (BJJ) brown belt holder. This achievement adds to her growing list of accomplishments in combat sports.
Karim began her sports journey with taekwondo and jiu-jitsu before transitioning to mixed martial arts (MMA). Early in her career, she faced criticism and resistance, but her determination and skill gradually earned her recognition both in Pakistan and internationally.
Eight years ago, Anita Karim made history as Pakistan’s first woman to compete internationally in MMA. Her success in the sport eventually led to a contract with ONE Championship, one of Asia’s leading MMA promotions. Despite her achievements, she has faced several challenges.
During her MMA debut in 2018, a referee delayed her fight due to concerns about her attire, highlighting the obstacles female fighters often face. Nevertheless, Karim persisted and quickly established herself as a dominant competitor.
Inside the cage, Anita Karim is known for her aggressive grappling and signature armlock technique. In 2022, she earned the nickname “the arm collector” after leaving two opponents with broken arms during a tournament. This reinforced her reputation for technical skill and finishing ability.
Beyond competition, Karim is committed to empowering women in Pakistan. She promotes self-defense and confidence-building, speaking openly about harassment and emphasizing the importance of combat sports for personal safety.
Achieving the BJJ brown belt solidifies Anita Karim’s status as a pioneer for women in Pakistan’s combat sports scene. Her success continues to inspire young women to pursue sports, overcome societal barriers, and aim for excellence.
