In the 38th match of the 2023 World Cup between Sri Lanka and Bangladesh in Delhi, a unique incident occurred today. Sri Lankan batsman Angelo Matthews was declared ‘timed out’ because he couldn’t resume his innings promptly after a break caused by a broken helmet strap.

Bangladeshi players noted the prolonged delay and appealed to the umpires, Erasmus and Illingworth. They engaged in an extensive discussion about this uncommon situation, with Angelo Mathews participating in an attempt to explain. Unfortunately, he couldn’t convince the umpires, resulting in his ‘timed out’ dismissal as per the three-minute rule, requiring the batter to be at the crease.

Matthews then slowly made his way back to the pitch, further consuming time, and encountered helmet issues. This marked the first instance in cricket history of a batter being dismissed ‘timed out.’

In the meantime, Sri Lanka is batting first against Bangladesh, and this match holds great significance for them as they must win to stay competitive in the tournament.
