Google’s latest operating system, Android 14, is currently grappling with a significant storage issue that is locking users out of their devices, particularly those utilizing the “multiple profiles” feature. Some have likened this bug to a form of “ransomware” because it denies users access to their device storage.

The problem is currently limited to Pixel devices, which represent only a small portion of the Android user base. Initially, it was believed to affect only the Pixel 6, but it has become evident that it impacts a wider range of devices in the process of upgrading to Android 14.

Affected devices include the Pixel 6, 6a, 7, 7a, Pixel Fold, and Pixel Tablet. Despite over 350 replies on the Google issue tracker, Google has yet to respond. The bug has been assigned a medium priority level of “P2” and remains unassigned, indicating that no active investigation is underway.

Users encountering this storage bug have shared log files containing error messages, such as “Failed to open directory /data/media/0: Structure needs cleaning.” This problem leads to various issues, including boot loops, being stuck on a perpetual “Pixel is starting…” message, inability to capture screenshots or access the camera app due to storage limitations, and the inability to browse files via USB from a PC. Both the System UI and Settings components repeatedly crash, rendering the device virtually unusable due to insufficient storage.

This problem appears to be related to Android’s user-profile system, which is designed to accommodate multiple users and segregate work and personal profiles. Users have reported that the primary profile, typically the most important one, becomes inaccessible.

For Pixel phone users, it is advisable to refrain from updating to Android 14 for the time being. Since Google is not actively investigating the issue, it may take a while before a resolution is found.
