A red flag has been hoisted above the Jamkaran Mosque in Qom, a powerful symbol in Shia tradition linked to the blood of martyrs and the quest for justice for the oppressed. The move follows rising tensions after reports of the assassination of Supreme Leader Ayatollah Ali Khamenei and Iran’s pledge to retaliate against the United States and Israel.
In Shia and Iranian culture, red banners—often inscribed with “Ya la-thārāt al-Ḥusayn” (“O avengers of Husayn”)—represent the martyrdom of Imam Hussain at Karbala and serve as a call for retribution. Such flags are usually displayed during Muharram or other major religious observances. Their appearance outside these occasions, particularly at a significant shrine, is commonly seen as a symbolic message of determination and impending response.
Iranian authorities have vowed a decisive reaction to the killing of Khamenei, labeling it a breach of a “red line.” The Speaker of Parliament announced that “Operation True Promise 4” began within hours of the Supreme Leader’s reported death, describing it as the first stage of Iran’s military retaliation. He indicated that additional strikes targeting American and Israeli interests would follow, promising severe consequences.
In Tehran, the Secretary of the Supreme National Security Council stated that Iran’s armed forces stand ready to safeguard the nation’s sovereignty with what he called “unprecedented force,” accusing Washington and Tel Aviv of attempts to destabilize the country. “There will be no leniency,” he asserted.
The Iranian Army likewise declared that Khamenei’s death “will not go unanswered,” reaffirming its commitment to protecting national independence and territorial integrity. Meanwhile, the Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps (IRGC) reported strikes on an ammunition vessel in the Indian Ocean and a US naval facility in Kuwait’s Abdullah Mubarak area as part of its initial retaliatory actions.
