AGP Admits Error, Revises Audit Report Total To Rs9.769 Trillion

The Auditor General of Pakistan (AGP) on Monday formally withdrew its earlier claim of Rs375 trillion in federal financial irregularities. Officials admitted “typing errors” had drastically inflated the numbers.

The revised Consolidated Audit Report for the 2024-25 audit year now lists irregularities at Rs9.769 trillion. The corrected report was uploaded to the AGP’s official website for public access.

The original report, released in August, had caused widespread disbelief. It cited irregularities worth 27 times the federal budget for 2023-24, which was Rs14.5 trillion, and more than three times Pakistan’s GDP of about Rs110 trillion. Officials admitted that “trillion” had mistakenly been typed instead of “billion” in multiple places.

The earlier report included procurement flaws at Rs284 trillion, civil works delays at Rs85.6 trillion, liabilities of Rs2.5 trillion, and revolving loans of Rs1.2 trillion. These figures were questioned even by government insiders for their accuracy.

Following scrutiny and criticism, the AGP issued the corrected version. The 4,858-page report now identifies Rs9.769 trillion in irregularities across various federal institutions. It also confirms that the federal audit exercise cost Rs3.02 billion.

The scope of the audit included extra-budgetary items such as revolving loans, land disputes, and accounts of corporations and companies. The report notes that the nature of irregularities is consistent with trends observed in previous audit exercises.

The AGP emphasized that the revised report ensures transparency and maintains accountability in public financial management. Officials said the correction clarifies previous misconceptions and restores credibility to the federal audit process.

This revision underscores the importance of accurate reporting and highlights the AGP’s commitment to improving federal financial oversight.
