Preparations for Lahore’s Basant celebrations have entered the final phase, as authorities move to strengthen safety measures across the city. Officials have declared 40 areas as Red Zones to maintain public safety during the festival.
Lahore police have completed a detailed security strategy and established joint patrol teams comprising police personnel and traffic wardens. These teams will oversee law and order, manage traffic flow, and respond swiftly to any incidents during the celebrations.
The Red Zones were selected based on previous incidents in which kite flying resulted in serious injuries and fatalities, prompting authorities to take extra precautions this year. Police officials stated that the designation of these sensitive areas is intended to prevent repeat tragedies and ensure a safer environment for citizens.
Authorities further announced that special permits will be mandatory for the transport of kites and kite strings. In addition, motorcyclists will be allowed to install safety barriers on their bikes to reduce the risk of injuries caused by sharp or metallic kite strings.
Despite the ongoing preparations, officials clarified that kite flying remains strictly prohibited for now. The activity will only be allowed once the Punjab government issues a formal notification lifting the ban. Until then, enforcement agencies will continue to ensure compliance with existing restrictions.
To strengthen monitoring and enforcement, CCTV cameras installed under the Safe City project will be used for continuous surveillance in designated areas. Officials said round-the-clock monitoring will help authorities quickly identify violations and respond effectively.
