Mexico Gen-Z Protests: Over 100 Injured Amid Corruption, Chaos

Mexico City erupted over the weekend as thousands of young protesters took to the streets, waving pirate skull flags and chanting against the killing of Uruapan mayor Carlos Alberto Manzo Rodríguez.

What began as a peaceful march quickly turned violent when metal barriers outside the National Palace were torn down, and teargas and fire extinguishers filled the air. The protest was fueled by outrage over Rodríguez’s assassination on November 1, after he had challenged local drug gangs.

For participants, the march was a call for justice, security, and recognition of a leader who confronted crime. At least 120 people were injured, mostly police officers, with around 100 requiring hospital treatment for cuts and bruises. Some protesters were also hurt in clashes with authorities.

President Sheinbaum faced criticism for her handling of public security. Days before the protest, she claimed right-wing parties were trying to infiltrate the Gen-Z movement and accused social media bots of artificially boosting turnout.

The demonstration drew not only young activists but also older opposition supporters, highlighting widespread anger over current security policies. Despite the chaos, many emphasized the need for stronger government action against crime.
