Maulana Tariq Jameel’s son, Yousuf Jameel, has addressed the growing backlash on social media following the Nikah ceremony of Dr. Nabiha Ali, in which his father served as the officiant.
In a clarification video, Yousuf said Maulana Tariq Jameel was asked by a close acquaintance to conduct the Nikah and agreed out of goodwill, as he has done for thousands of couples throughout his life. He emphasized that the renowned religious scholar had no personal connection with the bride beforehand.
Yousuf highlighted that his father has dedicated many years to religious preaching and public service, and his character is well known. He acknowledged that a public figure can be criticized if they genuinely make a mistake, but he felt this matter required proper context before passing judgment.
He explained that due to aging and health concerns, Maulana Tariq Jameel rarely conducts Nikah ceremonies now, but still does so occasionally because people feel honored to have him officiate their marriage. Often, families and events do not fully consider the protocols expected in his presence.
Yousuf admitted that the seating arrangement — where Maulana Tariq Jameel appeared close to the bride — should not have happened, as it does not align with Islamic etiquette. However, he reminded critics that his father is an elderly man who performs Nikahs for women the age of his own daughters and treats them with parental affection and respect.
He further criticized Dr. Nabiha Ali for crossing boundaries by recording videos and playing music inside their home, ignoring the decorum required. Yousuf said this carelessness led to a private religious ceremony being turned into a social media spectacle, putting unnecessary stress on his father.
In the end, Yousuf urged people to consider Maulana Tariq Jameel’s decades of contribution rather than judging him by one incident. He stated that had his father known how the event would unfold, he would not have allowed such actions.
