Sindh Launches Student Attendance System to Improve Schools

Sindh has introduced a new digital initiative known as the Student Attendance Monitoring and Redress System (SAMRS) to strengthen student tracking and overall school management across the province. The system was launched by Chief Minister Syed Murad Ali Shah, who described it as a modern step towards improving transparency, accountability, and planning in the education sector.

According to officials, SAMRS has been designed to gather precise data on student attendance, learning progress, teacher performance, and school conditions. This information will help education authorities identify issues early and take timely action. The chief minister said that SAMRS places technology at the center of educational reform, shifting decision-making away from assumptions and towards reliable data.

The new system is currently being introduced in phases. Initially, it has been implemented in hundreds of schools, with plans to expand gradually across more districts. Each student will have a verified record linked with their identification details, ensuring accurate tracking of attendance and reducing the chances of errors or ghost enrollments. Teachers and administrators will also have access to dashboards designed to highlight attendance trends and urgent concerns.

Officials expect that SAMRS will support efforts to reduce student absenteeism, improve retention rates, and enhance classroom engagement. The system is also intended to help authorities understand the underlying causes of drop-outs, whether related to school infrastructure, family circumstances, or other challenges. This will allow targeted interventions that meet the needs of each area.

The initiative aligns with Sindh’s broader push towards digital governance in public services. The province recently moved to link the Peoples Bus Service and EV taxis with the Safe City Network, reflecting the same emphasis on technology-driven monitoring to improve efficiency and public safety.

Education policymakers believe that SAMRS has the potential to become a model for other provinces, particularly because it combines monitoring with real-time problem reporting and resolution workflows. They note that improving attendance is linked not only to academic outcomes but also to student welfare and community involvement.

With its phased rollout underway, SAMRS marks a significant step toward strengthening public education structures in Sindh, aiming to make schools more responsive, accountable, and supportive of student needs.
