KP CM Afridi Criticizes Judicial Control Amendment

Chief Minister of Khyber Pakhtunkhwa, Sohail Afridi, has strongly criticized the recent constitutional amendment, saying it has effectively taken the judiciary “hostage.” Speaking to reporters, Afridi claimed that the amendment has undermined judicial independence and allowed political interference in court affairs.

He said the move was a deliberate attempt to weaken the courts, adding that judicial orders are now being ignored across the country. According to him, this not only violates the Constitution but also damages public trust in the justice system.

Afridi made these remarks while responding to questions about his recent meeting with the corps commander. He clarified that the visit was purely congratulatory and that no formal discussions were held. “The corps commander had come only to offer congratulations. It was an informal meeting,” he said, dismissing speculation about any political or administrative talks.

The KP CM further said that his government stands firm in defending the independence of institutions. He accused the federal authorities of manipulating constitutional provisions for political advantage. “If the judiciary loses its freedom, justice becomes meaningless,” Afridi remarked.

He also called for the restoration of respect for court orders, warning that continued disregard for judicial rulings could lead to a constitutional crisis. Afridi urged lawmakers to review the amendment and ensure that no institution exceeds its defined limits.

The Chief Minister’s comments come amid rising tensions between the judiciary and the central government over constitutional interpretations and the scope of judicial authority. Legal experts have also expressed concern that such amendments could tilt the balance of power and erode democratic safeguards.

Meanwhile, several provincial leaders have echoed Afridi’s stance, emphasizing that the judiciary’s independence must remain untouched. The political situation in Khyber Pakhtunkhwa remains sensitive, as debates over constitutional reforms intensify.

In related developments, the Punjab government has been expanding its Hunarmand Jawan initiative, aimed at empowering youth through skill development programs. The program’s expansion reflects how provinces are taking independent steps for governance while national institutions face growing criticism.

Afridi concluded by saying that his administration will continue to prioritize institutional integrity and rule of law in Khyber Pakhtunkhwa. “We must protect the judiciary from political control,” he said, adding that true democracy cannot exist without an independent justice system.
