Microsoft Teams is preparing to roll out a new update that will automatically display a user’s work location when connected to an office Wi-Fi network. The feature, set to launch in December 2025, aims to make workplace collaboration more transparent, especially in hybrid work environments.
According to an official post on the Microsoft 365 Roadmap, the upcoming update will detect when a user connects to their company’s Wi-Fi and will then automatically show their office building or location inside Microsoft Teams. This addition could make it easier for colleagues and managers to know who is working on-site or remotely.
However, the feature may also raise privacy concerns, as some employees prefer not to share their exact office location during work hours. Microsoft has not yet clarified how much control users will have over the visibility of this feature or whether there will be an option to disable it.
The update is still in development and will be available for both Windows and Mac users globally once released. Microsoft says the feature will help reduce confusion in flexible work setups by offering accurate information about team members’ locations.
This new feature is part of Microsoft’s broader effort to make Microsoft Teams a more efficient and context-aware collaboration platform. In recent updates, Teams introduced the ability to save important messages, allowing users to quickly find key information without scrolling through long conversations. The company has also announced customizable keyboard shortcuts, making it easier for users to access commonly used tools and symbols.

By combining automation with communication tools, Microsoft Teams continues to evolve as a central hub for hybrid and remote work. While many users may welcome the convenience of automatic location sharing, others could view it as a step too far in employee monitoring.
