Boat Accidents In Punjab Floods Kill 30; Rescue DG Defends Incidents

South Punjab is facing a series of tragic boat accidents during ongoing flood rescue operations. Around 30 people have died, and several others are reported missing. Many victims are children, women, and elderly residents.

Flood-hit districts including Jalalpur Pirwala, Liaquatpur, Minchinabad, Alipur, and Uch Sharif reported about 10 separate incidents of boats capsizing. Rescue teams were evacuating thousands of people trapped by rising waters when these accidents occurred.

Over eight individuals remain missing, and search operations are ongoing. Authorities are working to locate them and provide assistance to affected families.

Rescue DG and Emergency Services Secretary Dr. Rizwan explained that such boat accidents, though tragic, are sometimes unavoidable during large-scale evacuation efforts. “When 320,000 people are evacuated and three rivers flood at the same time, a few minor accidents are expected,” he said.

Provincial leaders also pointed to panic and lack of discipline among flood-affected residents as a contributing factor. Ministers Rana Sikandar Hayat and Malik Sohaib Ahmed Barth noted that many people rush onto boats excitedly, which increases the risk of capsizing.

Most of the deceased were unable to withstand strong currents when the boats overturned. With three rivers flooding simultaneously, rescue teams face immense pressure in conducting safe evacuations.

Authorities continue to urge residents to remain calm and follow instructions during rescue operations. Safety measures are being emphasized to prevent further boat accidents. The situation highlights the challenges faced by rescue teams during large-scale floods and the importance of careful coordination.
