Pakistan Peoples Party (PPP) Chairman Bilawal Bhutto-Zardari has called on Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif to waive electricity bills for farmers in flood-hit districts of Punjab.
Following his visit to Kasur, one of the worst-affected areas, Bilawal spoke with the Prime Minister over the phone. He highlighted the hardships faced by farmers due to recent floods and urged the federal government to act swiftly.
Bilawal stressed that the floods caused serious damage to Punjab’s agricultural sector. He requested either a waiver or deferral of agricultural loan repayments to ease financial burdens on farmers.
The PPP chairman also recommended providing direct financial assistance to affected farmers through the Benazir Income Support Programme (BISP). This support, he said, is crucial for helping families recover and rebuild their livelihoods.
The Prime Minister assured Bilawal that the federal government would coordinate with provincial authorities to provide immediate relief. He emphasised that the spirit of service and welfare is a vital part of Pakistan’s social values, especially during natural disasters.
Shehbaz Sharif highlighted the importance of aid, donations, and volunteer efforts during crises. Institutions such as BISP and Bait-ul-Mal continue to provide millions of Pakistanis with food, healthcare, and emergency support.
Officials confirmed that federal and provincial governments, along with the armed forces and volunteers, are jointly working on rescue, relief, and rehabilitation operations. Efforts are focused on ensuring that affected communities receive food, shelter, healthcare, and essential services.
Bilawal’s intervention underscores the urgent need to protect farmers and vulnerable populations from the economic impact of floods. His advocacy aims to ensure that immediate financial relief and long-term support reach the disaster-affected districts.
