The Rawalpindi Bench of the Lahore High Court (LHC) on Monday admitted a petition challenging the Punjab government’s decision to extend summer vacations in schools.
The plea was filed by a student, Danial, with Justice Jawadul Hassan issuing notices to the Punjab education secretary and other respondents for their replies.
Danial’s lawyer, Hafiz Waqar Ahmad Awan, argued that the extension was unjustified, adding that nearly three months of school closure amounted to “gambling with children’s future.”
During the hearing, Justice Jawad questioned the government’s reasoning, noting that even courts had remained functional during wars. He criticized the practice of shutting schools for extended summer breaks and later for fog.
The judge stressed that education is a constitutional right and students cannot be deprived of it, especially when parents pay high fees expecting consistent learning opportunities. The case will move forward once the government submits its response.
