The Punjab government has unveiled plans to power all Orange Line Train stations with solar energy. As part of the initiative, a 1.6-megawatt solar plant will be installed to meet key electricity needs, including those of escalators, platforms, and other station services.
Officials highlight that this shift will significantly cut operational costs and ease the financial strain on the government, which currently subsidizes the train service. The transition to solar power is projected to save crores of rupees in monthly electricity expenses.
This development aligns with a nationwide trend, as more Pakistanis turn to solar solutions to manage rising energy costs and load-shedding. Experts see the move as part of a broader national push for cleaner, cost-effective, and dependable energy alternatives.
The Orange Line, a flagship transit system in Lahore, has previously been criticized for its high operating expenses. Authorities believe this solar upgrade will boost sustainability and reduce reliance on the national grid.
Energy experts also suggest that this step could inspire other public transport systems and government sectors to explore renewable energy, aiding Pakistan’s environmental goals while improving economic efficiency.
Once fully implemented, the solar system is expected to lower costs and reduce Lahore’s carbon emissions — benefiting both the environment and the public.
