On July 27, the Islamabad Food Authority (IFA) conducted a raid on an illegal slaughterhouse in Tarnol, near Islamabad. During the operation, officials seized 1,000 kilograms of donkey meat and over 50 slaughtered donkeys.
This discovery has raised serious concerns about the illegal trade of donkey meat in Pakistan. The meat was reportedly being sold illegally, possibly even exported abroad.
Donkey meat is considered haram in Pakistan due to religious beliefs. The consumption of donkey meat is forbidden for the Muslim majority in the country. Besides religious reasons, donkey meat from illegal sources poses health risks. Such meat is often sold without proper veterinary inspection.
Consumers have also been deceived by sellers who mix donkey meat with beef to increase profits. This practice harms public health and violates consumer rights.
Veterinary expert Dr. Muhammad Ali explained how to identify donkey meat. According to him, donkey meat is darker than beef and has a bluish tint. It also has a strong, unusual smell when cooked. Dr. Ali recommended using lab tests like ELISA and PCR to confirm meat species when in doubt.
Authorities urge the public to buy meat only from licensed butchers and trusted sources. They advise avoiding cheap beef from unregulated stalls or restaurants. Consumers should also ask about the origin of meat before purchasing or eating out.
This raid highlights the need for better food safety controls in Pakistan. It also stresses the importance of raising public awareness about donkey meat and its risks. The Islamabad Food Authority and other agencies are expected to increase inspections to prevent illegal meat trade.
