Pakistan raised serious concerns at the recent OIC session regarding India’s threats to suspend the Indus Waters Treaty. The issue was highlighted during the 25th session of the OIC Independent Permanent Human Rights Commission held in Jeddah. Pakistan’s Permanent Representative to the OIC, Syed Fawad Sher, spoke about the urgent matter under the theme “The Right to Water.”
Sher emphasized the critical importance of water rights for Pakistan, a country already facing severe water scarcity. He warned that India’s threat to block Pakistan’s water under the treaty could worsen the climate crisis and water shortages in the region. The OIC forum provides Pakistan a platform to raise awareness about these challenges and seek support from the international community.
The Indus Waters Treaty is a long-standing agreement that regulates water sharing between India and Pakistan. Sher stressed the treaty’s legal, moral, and social significance and urged OIC members to support Pakistan’s water rights. He reminded the audience that OIC foreign ministers have expressed concern about India’s unilateral actions. Additionally, global voices also advocate for the continuation of the treaty to maintain peace and cooperation.
Pakistan assured the OIC that it will continue to raise the water dispute issue at various international platforms. The country is determined to protect its water resources and uphold its rights under the Indus Waters Treaty. The ongoing diplomatic efforts highlight the importance of peaceful conflict resolution through dialogue and legal frameworks.
The OIC plays a vital role in facilitating discussions on regional issues like water security. Pakistan’s active participation in the OIC reflects its commitment to addressing water challenges and seeking collective solutions with member states. The forum’s support is crucial for ensuring stability and cooperation in South Asia.
