The Punjab Assembly’s Standing Committee has approved the Property Tax Amendment Bill 2025. This new bill introduces a reward system for individuals who report property tax evasion, corruption, and bribery.
According to the bill, anyone who provides credible information leading to the detection of property tax evasion will be recognized as a whistleblower. These whistleblowers will receive a monetary reward as an incentive.
The Punjab Assembly hopes this step will encourage citizens to actively participate in improving the province’s tax collection system. Punjab’s property tax regime has faced challenges such as loopholes and underreporting for years.
The amendment also includes provisions to reward officials from the Excise, Taxation, and Narcotics Control Department. Those who detect and act against tax evasion will be eligible for incentives under the new law.
An important part of the bill requires the Collector to identify any officer responsible for oversight or failure to act in cases of proven tax evasion. This aims to increase accountability within tax authorities.
The Punjab Assembly’s approval of this bill signals its commitment to increasing transparency and reducing corruption in tax collection. By motivating both the public and officials, the government aims to strengthen the tax system.
Experts say the bill can help boost tax revenues and promote fairness in the property market. The rewards for whistleblowers will provide a strong incentive to report illegal activities.
With the new law in place, Punjab hopes to close gaps in its tax collection and ensure better governance. The bill is expected to bring positive changes to the province’s financial management and public trust.
The Punjab Assembly will now move forward with the final steps for the bill’s implementation. This move is widely seen as a key reform in the province’s efforts to modernize its taxation system.
