Tesla has officially entered the Indian market with the opening of its first showroom in Mumbai. This marks a significant milestone for the electric vehicle giant after years of discussions and delays. The showroom, located in the upscale Bandra Kurla Complex, is designed as a “Tesla Experience Centre,” offering customers the chance to explore Tesla’s latest cars.
The showroom features two versions of the Model Y, the rear-wheel drive (RWD) and the long-range RWD, both imported from Tesla’s Shanghai factory. The RWD variant is priced at ₹59,89,000 (around $68,000), while the long-range version costs ₹67,89,000 (approximately $79,000). Both models come with an option for Full Self-Driving, which can be added for ₹600,000 (roughly $7,000).
Customers in cities like Mumbai, Delhi, and Gurugram can now place their orders with a deposit of ₹22,220 (around $260). Deliveries for the RWD model are set to begin in the third quarter of 2025, while the long-range version will be available in the final quarter of the year. To support this rollout, Tesla will also install four charging stations each in Delhi and Mumbai, featuring Supercharger units and destination chargers.
Although the Indian government has recently reduced import duties on electric vehicles, Tesla has not committed to building a manufacturing facility in India yet. The company remains cautious, with CEO Elon Musk expressing reluctance to start local production in the near future. Tesla has been recruiting staff in key cities like New Delhi, Pune, and Mumbai as it prepares for a broader market entry.
Tesla’s cautious approach in India reflects its strategy of evaluating the market before making any large-scale investments. As electric vehicles (EVs) account for a small share of India’s annual car market, Tesla is focusing on building its brand and presence. Despite this, competition in the Indian EV market is growing, with companies like China’s BYD gaining ground.
Tesla’s entry into India is a notable step in its global expansion plans. While it faces competition, the company’s arrival could help accelerate the adoption of electric vehicles in the country.
