Generative AI is rapidly transforming the freelance landscape, replacing low-complexity tasks while significantly boosting demand for AI-integrated roles. According to newly published data from Upwork, cited by Axios, freelancers proficient in AI are earning notably more than those without such skills.
AI Freelancers See 25% Income Growth
Freelancers specializing in artificial intelligence saw a 25% increase in earnings over the past year. Those who blend AI with existing expertise—such as machine learning specialists or graphic designers using generative tools—are commanding premium rates. The report reveals that AI-related freelance roles pay over 40% more per hour than non-AI jobs.

“Professionals with strong domain knowledge who incorporate AI tools into their workflows benefit the most,” said Kelly Monahan, Managing Director at the Upwork Research Institute.
Human-AI Collaboration Preferred Over Full Automation
Despite AI’s rising influence, most employers remain cautious about full automation. Upwork’s research indicates a clear preference for human workers who use AI as an enhancement tool, rather than replacing humans entirely. In fact, workers augmenting their roles with AI outnumber those pursuing full automation by more than two to one.
This trend aligns with earlier insights from Anthropic, which emphasized that AI still requires human oversight. Managers reportedly have greater trust in human-AI collaboration than in fully autonomous AI systems.
Decline in Basic Coding, Rise of “Vibe Coding”
While demand for basic, repetitive coding tasks has declined, experienced developers remain in high demand for complex projects. Freelancers involved in coding-related work for at least 25% of their time are now earning 11% more than they did before ChatGPT’s debut in late 2022.
A new trend called “vibe coding” is also emerging. It allows non-technical freelancers to use AI tools to generate code and design solutions—broadening opportunities for generalists who can harness AI creatively without in-depth programming skills.
