Pakistan Assumes UN Security Council Presidency to Lead Global Agenda

UNITED NATIONS – Pakistan on Tuesday assumed the presidency of the United Nations Security Council (UNSC) for the month of July, marking its eighth term on the 15-member body and the first time holding the presidency since 2013.

Islamabad began its current two-year tenure as a non-permanent member of the UNSC in January 2025, a term set to continue through the end of 2026. While the UNSC presidency rotates monthly and does not carry executive authority, it enables the presiding nation to shape the Council’s agenda and discussions—especially amid ongoing global challenges such as the conflicts in Gaza and Ukraine.

Dar: Presidency reflects Pakistan’s commitment to UN Charter

Deputy Prime Minister and Foreign Minister Ishaq Dar, in a statement posted on social media, said Pakistan takes on the role with “humility and a firm commitment” to the principles outlined in the UN Charter. “At a time when conflicts and humanitarian crises are intensifying across the globe, we are guided by the values of peace and multilateral cooperation,” he stated.

During Pakistan’s presidency, Mr. Dar is expected to chair two high-level meetings, including the quarterly open debate on the situation in Palestine—a session anticipated to garner global attention amid the worsening humanitarian crisis in Gaza.

Ambassador Ahmed: Pakistan seeks principled, inclusive leadership

Pakistan’s Permanent Representative to the UN, Ambassador Asim Iftikhar Ahmed, described the current international landscape as one of “severe uncertainty, escalating conflicts, complex geopolitical situations, and mounting threats to global peace and security.”

He emphasized that Pakistan will use its presidency to promote a “principled and balanced” approach in the Council’s deliberations, with a focus on transparency, inclusiveness, and effectiveness.

Reaffirming Islamabad’s long-standing support for the peaceful resolution of disputes and the use of diplomacy, Ambassador Ahmed added, “We are determined to strengthen the multilateral system and foster greater cooperation among member states.”

“Our goal is to enable collective, timely, and constructive action aligned with the UN Charter and the expectations of the global community,” he concluded.
