Google’s New AI Search So Advanced It Could Potentially Replace Websites

Google Unveils New AI-Powered Search Mode Offering Smarter, Deeper Results

At its annual developer conference, Google announced a major upgrade to its search engine with the launch of an AI-powered search mode that promises more nuanced and intelligent results. The new feature, currently available in the United States, enhances reasoning, supports multi-modal queries, and allows users to ask longer, more complex questions with follow-up capabilities.

CEO Sundar Pichai described the innovation as a “total reimagining of search,” building on Google’s existing AI Overviews, which have been used by over 1.5 billion users globally since their introduction last year. Liz Reid, Google’s head of search, emphasized that the AI mode searches “across the entire web” to provide a more comprehensive and interactive user experience.

The launch comes amid rising competition from AI rivals like OpenAI’s ChatGPT, which also integrates web search functions. However, industry experts warn that replacing traditional “blue links” with AI summaries may reduce ad impressions, potentially impacting Google’s advertising revenue. Publishers have expressed concerns over reduced traffic as AI answers lessen the need to visit original content sites.

Adding to Google’s challenges, Apple’s Eddy Cue revealed in a federal antitrust trial that Google search traffic on Apple devices declined for the first time in over 20 years, citing growing competition from AI-based platforms.

Alongside the search update, Google introduced other AI innovations, including real-time speech translation, virtual try-ons using personal photos, and AI shopping assistants that autonomously find deals and make purchases. The company also plans a new “Ultra” subscription tier at $250 per month, granting access to advanced AI tools such as autonomous AI agents within Chrome and the Gemini AI app.

This announcement marks a significant step in Google’s ongoing effort to maintain its dominance in search while navigating increasing scrutiny and market competition.
