The Benazir Income Support Program (BISP), a cornerstone of Pakistan’s social safety net, is set to receive a significant budgetary boost to enhance support for low-income and vulnerable families.

  • Proposed Allocation: Rs 716 billion earmarked in the upcoming national budget, with a potential increase of up to 20% to address inflation and socio-economic pressures.
  • Cash Transfer Increase:
    • Starting January 2026, monthly cash transfers will rise by Rs 1,000.
    • Quarterly stipends will increase from Rs 13,500 to Rs 14,500, with future adjustments linked to inflation to protect beneficiaries’ purchasing power.
  • Expansion of Beneficiaries:
    • Target to cover 10 million families (1 crore) under the Kafalat program.
    • Already, 700,000 new families enrolled in the current fiscal year.
    • This expansion seeks to broaden social protection for marginalized communities.
  • Improved Payment Transparency:
    • New banking partners will be added to enhance transparency and security.
    • Payments will be disbursed through multiple platforms and account types to increase accessibility.
  • Complementary Social Sector Support:
    • An additional Rs 3,156 billion is proposed for health and education sectors, supporting BISP’s social welfare objectives.

This budget enhancement is expected to strengthen BISP’s role in poverty alleviation and social protection amidst rising economic challenges.
