Former US President Joe Biden Diagnosed with Aggressive Prostate Cancer
Former US President Joe Biden, 82, has been diagnosed with an aggressive form of prostate cancer that has spread to his bones, his office announced on Sunday. The diagnosis came after Biden experienced urinary symptoms and was confirmed on Friday.
Biden and his family are currently reviewing treatment options. According to his office, the cancer, while aggressive, is hormone-sensitive, allowing for effective management.
The cancer scored a nine out of 10 on the Gleason score—a grading system for prostate cancer aggressiveness. Dr. Herbert Lepor, a urologist at NYU Langone, described this score as “very high risk,” but noted that many men with metastatic prostate cancer can live five to ten years or longer due to recent advances in treatment.
During his presidency from 2021 to 2025, Biden’s physical and mental health faced public scrutiny. He ended his 2024 reelection campaign last July after a debated performance that raised concerns among supporters.

Some Democrats have recently acknowledged that nominating Biden for a second term was a mistake due to widespread voter concerns about his age. Senator Chris Murphy admitted the party should have listened to these concerns earlier.
Since leaving office, Biden has maintained a low profile, making only a few public appearances. He has defended his presidential legacy and denied claims of cognitive decline.
Biden lost his son Beau Biden to brain cancer in 2015. In 2022, he revived the Cancer Moonshot program, originally launched under President Obama, aiming to cut cancer death rates by 50% within 25 years.
