Punjab Government to Launch Major Tourism Initiative, Restoring 170 Historic Sites

The Punjab government has announced plans to establish the Punjab Tourism and Heritage Authority, which will oversee the restoration of 170 historic sites across the province, including temples, mosques, gurdwaras, and churches. The initiative aims to elevate these locations to international standards as tourist centers, fostering cultural preservation and economic development.

A summary for the formation of the authority has been submitted to the provincial cabinet for approval, and once ratified, the body will manage all institutions related to heritage and tourism. The project covers an impressive 101 gurdwaras, 53 churches, and several other historic landmarks. Senior Provincial Minister Maryam Aurangzeb has approved all the projects outlined under this ambitious program.

The Punjab Tourism and Heritage Authority Act 2024 has already been enacted, and a comprehensive tourism policy has been crafted to guide the project. The restoration of these historic sites will occur in phases, with work set to begin in June and continue through subsequent phases. A three-phase plan for restoration has also been incorporated into Punjab’s annual development program, with tenders for the work expected to commence in July.

As part of this initiative, Punjab will see the development of Bansra Gali, a tourist village, as well as 16 parks. In a bid to make Taxila an international “tourist city,” the city will be further developed with new temples and galleries dedicated to Buddhist history. Additionally, 46 inactive gurdwaras will be restored for the Sikh community, and modern infrastructure and roads will be constructed to support tourism.

Punjab Chief Minister Maryam Nawaz expressed her optimism for the program, stating that Punjab will become a premier global tourism destination. “We will showcase Punjab’s rich cultural and historical legacy to the world,” she said, emphasizing the province’s deep cultural roots as a meeting point for various religions and eras. She added that promoting tourism will not only safeguard Punjab’s heritage but also boost economic development and enhance Pakistan’s international image.
