Kaspersky Warns of Rising Cyber Threats Targeting Children on Roblox

On World Safer Internet Day (February 11, 2025), Kaspersky experts have highlighted the increasing cyber risks children face online, focusing on one of the most popular gaming platforms—Roblox.

Alarming Rise in Cyberattacks

Kaspersky detected over 1.6 million attempted cyberattacks disguised as Roblox-related files in 2024 alone. These attacks peaked in:

  • August: 179,286 attempts
  • September: 160,116 attempts
  • October: 151,638 attempts

Why Roblox is a Prime Target?

With millions of monthly active users, Roblox is more than just a game—it is a digital playground where children explore immersive worlds. However, the game’s popularity has also made it a hotspot for cybercriminals, who disguise malware as mods, cheats, or free in-game currency generators.

Common Scams in Roblox

One of the most prevalent scams involves fake in-game currency generators. Cybercriminals lure players by offering free in-game currency, asking them to:

  1. Enter their game ID or username
  2. Select their platform (Android, iOS, Windows, PlayStation, Xbox, or Nintendo)
  3. Complete verification tasks like surveys to win prizes (such as iPhones or PlayStations)
  4. Pay for prize delivery, leading to financial loss with no prize received

Expert Advice on Online Safety

Vasily Kolesnikov, security expert at Kaspersky, stresses the need for strong cybersecurity awareness among young gamers:

“Cybercriminals are constantly evolving their tactics, and to protect kids who are actively exploring the digital world, we need to make cybersecurity an essential part of their upbringing.”

To create a safer online environment, parents and children should:

  • Enable Two-Factor Authentication (2FA)
  • Use Trusted Security Solutions
  • Promote Cyber Hygiene by avoiding unverified downloads

Final Thoughts

As cyber threats continue to evolve, Safer Internet Day serves as a crucial reminder to prioritize digital security, ensuring young gamers can enjoy their favorite games without falling victim to scams.
