The US consulate in Karachi has successfully convinced an American woman, Onija Andrew Robbins, to return home after she was hospitalised during a tumultuous stay in Pakistan. Robbins had traveled to Karachi in October 2024 to meet an 18-year-old Pakistani youth, Nidal Ahmed Memon, whom she met through social media. The story quickly gained attention due to the unusual circumstances of their online relationship and the dramatic turn of events that followed.
After being hospitalised at Jinnah Hospital, Robbins received medical treatment for critically low haemoglobin levels and her bipolar disorder. Consulate officials, who met with her at the hospital, arranged for her return ticket and convinced her to leave before February 11. Hospital staff had expressed concerns about her health, which improved after receiving blood transfusions, raising her haemoglobin levels from 4 to 9.

Robbins’ online relationship with Memon began to unravel upon her arrival in Karachi. It was revealed that she had used a filter to present herself as a white blonde woman in their online interactions. Despite the deception, the couple wed in an online Nikah, but the relationship faced opposition from Memon’s mother, who disapproved due to Robbins’ age and her catfishing of her son.
As the situation escalated, Memon and his family went into hiding, leaving Robbins stranded. She camped outside their apartment, attracting media attention and becoming a viral sensation due to her public outbursts and demands for money. The spectacle grew, with social media flooded with memes and videos about her unusual journey.
With her health now stabilised, and under the watchful eye of the US consulate, Robbins is expected to return to the US, bringing an end to this bizarre chapter.
