In a tragic incident, Professor Feroza Jameel was murdered in Multan after her husband hired a hitman when she refused to allow him to marry a second time.

Police reports revealed that the husband orchestrated the crime, agreeing to pay Rs1.5 million to the assassin. To mislead investigators, he staged the murder as a robbery. The crime occurred while the couple, along with their child, was traveling by car. The hitman intercepted their vehicle and fatally shot the professor.

Authorities apprehended the husband, the shooter, and two accomplices following an investigation. The husband admitted his involvement, confessing to paying Rs200,000 upfront to the hitman, with the promise of Rs1.3 million upon completion of the crime.

This case highlights the pervasive issue of gender-based violence in Pakistan, including domestic abuse and other forms of violence against women. Such crimes are particularly prevalent in rural areas where societal norms and legal protections for women are often inadequate.

Globally, the statistics on gender-based violence are alarming. A UN report from 2023 noted that 85,000 women were murdered that year, with 60% killed by intimate partners or family members. The report emphasized that the home remains the most dangerous place for women, underscoring the urgent need for reforms to safeguard their lives and rights.
