Bangladesh all-rounder Shakib Al Hasan has been suspended from bowling in all competitions organised by the England and Wales Cricket Board (ECB) after his bowling action was deemed illegal. The suspension followed independent testing at Loughborough University, which revealed that Shakib’s elbow extension exceeded the 15-degree limit allowed by regulations. The scrutiny on his action came after his appearance for Surrey in the County Championship against Somerset in September 2024.
Umpires reported Shakib’s action during the match, and the subsequent testing confirmed the violation. To resume bowling in ECB-run competitions, Shakib will have to undergo a reassessment of his action and demonstrate that his elbow extension falls within the permissible range.

This suspension is another hurdle in Shakib’s career, which has seen a series of disruptions recently. Earlier this year, Shakib announced his retirement from T20 internationals and also chose to skip his farewell Test match against South Africa due to political unrest in Bangladesh, where he serves as a member of parliament for the ruling Awami League. His political involvement has drawn significant attention, especially amid the country’s turmoil and protests.
Shakib has faced major challenges before, including a two-year ban (with one year suspended) in 2019 for breaching the ICC’s anti-corruption code. His current suspension from bowling adds to the turbulent period he is navigating, both on and off the field.
