Canada has ordered TikTok to shut down its operations nationwide due to national security concerns, following a thorough review by Canadian intelligence agencies. Though the government hasn’t imposed a full ban, TikTok must end its business activities in Canada. This action aligns with previous steps taken by Canada to restrict TikTok on official devices, a move similar to the U.S. policy citing security risks associated with TikTok’s parent company, ByteDance. TikTok is currently appealing the U.S. ban in court.

Canada’s Minister of Innovation, Science and Industry, François-Philippe Champagne, stated that the decision is based on findings from the review and recommendations from security and intelligence agencies.

TikTok is also contesting Canada’s directive, with a spokesperson commenting that closing Canadian offices and cutting numerous jobs is detrimental and that the company will seek legal action. TikTok will still be accessible to creators and businesses for audience engagement and exploration.

Unlike the U.S., Canada has not pushed ByteDance to sell TikTok to a local company to avoid a ban, leaving questions about how TikTok will operate within Canada after ceasing official business activities.
