Special Parliamentary Committee to Decide Pakistan’s Next Chief Justice Today

ISLAMABAD – The process to select Pakistan’s next Chief Justice has officially begun, as the National Assembly has formed a special parliamentary committee tasked with overseeing the appointment.

A notification from the National Assembly Secretariat confirmed the formation of the committee, which includes members from major political parties. Representing the Pakistan Muslim League (N) are Khawaja Asif, Ahsan Iqbal, Azam Nazeer Tarar, and Shaista Pervaiz Malik. The Pakistan People’s Party has nominated Raja Pervaiz Ashraf, Naveed Qamar, Senator Farooq H. Naek, and Rania Ansar. The Sunni Ittehad Council is represented by Barrister Gohar Ali Khan, Sahibzada Hamid Raza, and Senator Ali Zafar, while Jamiat Ulema-e-Islam (JUI) has Senator Kamran Murtaza on the committee.

In accordance with the 26th Constitutional Amendment, the outgoing Chief Justice, Faiz Isa, is required to submit three names for consideration by tonight.

A key meeting of the special parliamentary committee is scheduled for 4 PM today at the Parliament House, where the members will discuss and make decisions regarding the appointment of Pakistan’s next Chief Justice. The outcome of this meeting is expected to have a significant impact on the future of the judiciary in Pakistan.
