China Initiates Survey to Explore Concerns Surrounding 'Fear of Having Children’

China’s National Health Commission (NHC) is conducting a survey involving 30,000 participants to explore factors influencing attitudes toward childbearing and the “fear surrounding having children.” This initiative comes as Chinese authorities strive to address the country’s declining birthrate.

The survey will encompass individuals from 150 counties and 1,500 communities across China, as reported by the state-backed Global Times. The China Population and Development Research Center, under the NHC, is overseeing the study.

Beijing’s efforts to encourage young couples to have children are driven by the alarming trend of population decline, with China experiencing a second consecutive year of decreasing population in 2023. The survey aims to analyze the reluctance and fears associated with childbirth and will ultimately inform fertility support and incentive measures.

The last comprehensive family and fertility survey was conducted in 2021. This new survey coincides with China’s National Bureau of Statistics’ nationwide sample survey from October 10 to November 30, aimed at monitoring population changes.

In state media, population development is frequently linked to the concept of a strong and rejuvenated China. In September, Chinese health officials emphasized the importance of promoting marriage and childbirth at “appropriate ages” and called for shared parenting responsibilities to help guide young people toward positive views on marriage, childbirth, and family life.
