Government Prioritizes Women’s Education: HEC Chairman Emphasizes Importance of English Access Scholarship Program

The Government of Pakistan is committed to prioritizing women’s education, recognizing that women are a vital part of society. Dr. Mukhtar Ahmed, Chairman of the Higher Education Commission (HEC), made this statement during the Opening Ceremony of the English Access Scholarship Program at Allama Iqbal Open University.

Dr. Ahmed highlighted that the enrolment ratio of female students in universities across Pakistan stands at 52%, and efforts are ongoing to increase this number further.

Professor Dr. Nasir Mahmood, Vice Chancellor of Allama Iqbal Open University, emphasized that education is the only path to development and prosperity, asserting that no nation can secure a future without it. He encouraged students to focus on their education to ensure a successful future.

Dr. Mahmood expressed gratitude to the US Embassy and the English Department at AIOU for their support in providing English education to Pakistani children. He pointed out that mastering English would open numerous opportunities for higher education and job prospects internationally.

Gerald Frank, the Regional English Language Officer at the US Embassy, noted that Pakistan is unique among 80 nations, with 27,000 students having received this scholarship. He acknowledged the efforts of Allama Iqbal Open University, which has successfully enrolled 250 new students from three districts: Mianwali, Bhakkar, and Attock.

Frank explained that through the program, students would not only become proficient in English but also develop critical thinking, digital literacy, and an appreciation for world cultures.

Professor Dr. Abdul Aziz Sahir, Dean of the Faculty of Social Sciences and Humanities at AIOU, reiterated the importance of English as a major global language and the primary medium of international communication. He encouraged students to learn English diligently to master the language and enhance their reading, speaking, and writing skills.

During the event, students shared their experiences with the English Access Program and showcased traditional dances representing the cultures of Attock, Mianwali, and Bhakkar.

Dr. Muhammad Kamal Khan, Chairman of the English Department, and Dr. Amjad Khan, the program coordinator, both highlighted that the English Access Program serves as a gateway to a brighter future, equipping students with essential communication, critical thinking, and collaboration skills needed in today’s globalized world.
