Punjab Releases Over 6,000 Inmates Upon Completion of Educational Programs

Over 6,000 Prisoners Released in Punjab After Completing Education

In Punjab, over 6,000 prisoners have been released in the past five years after completing their educational programs, according to a spokesperson from the Punjab Interior Department. However, concerns have been raised regarding the inactivity of the Education Remission Committee, which is crucial for overseeing the early release of educated inmates.

The committee, responsible for convening monthly to discuss and approve the release of inmates based on their educational achievements, has not met in the last two months. A letter highlighting this issue was sent to relevant officials, emphasizing the negative impact of this delay on the timely release of prisoners who have diligently pursued their studies while incarcerated.

Importance of the Education Remission Committee

The Education Remission Committee plays a vital role in awarding sentence reductions to inmates who reach certain educational milestones. These milestones include completing their matriculation, intermediate, bachelor’s, or master’s degrees. Additionally, prisoners who memorize or translate the Quran can receive significant sentence reductions, typically ranging from six months to two years. Vocational training also qualifies inmates for a one-month reduction in their sentences.

The Need for Action

It is crucial for the Education Remission Committee to resume its meetings promptly to recognize and reward the educational accomplishments of prisoners. By doing so, the committee not only encourages inmates to pursue their studies but also aids in their reintegration into society as educated individuals who can contribute positively. The timely acknowledgment of these efforts is essential for fostering an environment of rehabilitation and personal growth within the prison system.
