Election officials from five states have urged Elon Musk to address concerns about his AI chatbot, Grok, which has been criticized for spreading misinformation about the 2024 presidential election. The secretaries of state from Minnesota, Pennsylvania, Michigan, Washington, and New Mexico have requested that Musk “immediately implement changes” to ensure Grok provides accurate election information.
Grok, launched last November on X (formerly Twitter), was introduced as a less filtered alternative to other AI models like ChatGPT. However, it has faced scrutiny for disseminating false information, including a recent incident where it inaccurately reported ballot deadlines and candidate eligibility following President Joe Biden’s announcement of his non-re-election.

The chatbot’s errors were corrected only after a 10-day delay, during which misinformation was widely shared. The secretaries of state have suggested that X should direct users seeking election information to the nonpartisan resource CanIVote.org, similar to the practice used by OpenAI’s ChatGPT.
A spokesperson for X has not yet responded to requests for comment, and Minnesota Secretary of State Steve Simon criticized the company’s slow response as insufficient. He emphasized the importance of accurate information and timely corrections from social media platforms in the lead-up to the election.
